Dr. Marie Kerl ACVIM Internal Medicine and ACVECC Critical Care

Dr. Marie Kerl graduated from the Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1987. Following 2 years of general practice in Columbus, GA, she completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the Animal Medical Center in New York, NY. She remained at AMC for her residency in internal medicine, and obtained board certification by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Small Animal Internal Medicine) in 1995. She remained on staff at the AMC, where she completed a residency in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine, until 1999. She completed degree requirements for Master of Public Health in 2010 at the University of Missouri.

Dr. Kerl joined the faculty of the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery, University of Missouri in 1999. Her duties as Teaching Professor include clinical rotations on the internal medicine and critical care services, instruction of professional degree students, interns, and residents, and didactic teaching at the professional and graduate levels. She has served as president of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society, and chair of the examination committee of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.  Dr. Kerl has received the Norden Distinguished Teaching Award, as well as two Golden Aesculapius awards during her tenure at the University of Missouri. Dr. Kerl is a member of veterinary disaster response teams at a national and state level, and has responded for veterinary disaster management following Hurricane Sandy, Hurricane Katrina, and the Joplin tornadoes. Particular professional interests include renal and urinary disease, infectious disease, fluid and electrolyte disorders, hospital biosecurity, and veterinary disaster response.

Dr. Robert Swinger ACVO Ophthalmology

Dr. Robert Swinger completed his undergraduate work and received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois in 2003. After completing an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Veterinary Specialists of South Florida in Cooper City, he went on to complete both an ophthalmology internship in 2005 and residency in 2009 at the Animal Eye Specialty Clinics in Miami, Deerfield Beach, and West Palm Beach. Soon thereafter, he joined the VCA Aurora Animal Hospital outside of Chicago and developed a successful ophthalmology service where he continues to actively consult. In 2011, Dr. Swinger launched Animal Eye Guys (AEG) and joined the Hollywood Animal Hospital veterinary team. In 2012, AEG expanded it's services, offering two satellite locations in Miami Beach and South Miami. Dr. Swinger is board certified and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists.
